about

I'd been watching a documentary about Laurel Canyon in the late 60s "Echo in the Canyon" and I think the lyrical and thematic ideas were sparked from that.
The Mamas & Papas & Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" were on high rotation for me at the time, so the result was almost a homage to that majestic scene.

lyrics

We rode the sun swept highway all summer long
Canyon to coast, valley down to the shoals
Though we knew what we were doing was wrong
No reproach could mould our gentle minds

And what else could a poor boy do?
Eyes were always stuck on you
Don't ask me if it's better against the tide
For you remain my first concern
Some things you just never learn
Don't try to understand or justify.

I thought I lost you in enchanted hills
When darkness fell upon the church of San Miguel
In the maelstrom one sure moment of still
The sweet kiss of death when we were at our best

But what more could a poor boy do?
Eyes were always stuck on you
Don't ask me if it's better against the tide
For you remain my sole concern
Some things you just never learn
Don't try to understand or justify.

And oh the days are long
But memories creep into my mind and keep me hanging on
Your ship has sailed afar into the sunset
And Pacific Ocean waves, I'm here where I belong.

And what else could a poor boy do?
Eyes were always stuck on you
Don't tell me it get's easier in time
But if time is what you really need
Baby who am I to impede?
I will do what's right,
And set your spirit free, from me.
