about

Perth power pop trio Rinehearts, who comprise former members of Screwtop Detonators and Snowman, are set to release ‘Powerlines’, the first single to be lifted from Rinehearts’ forthcoming, second album, ‘Full Bloom’, through Cheersquad Records & Tapes.

The band has been lucky enough to work with none other than legendary musician/songwriter/producer Dom Mariani (The Stems/DM3/The Some Loves/ Datura4) on production duties. It is a dream come true for the band and an exciting time in their career.

"Rinehearts are that rare band that you come across from time to time, doing their thing without a lot of fuss, but with a true dedication and knack for crafting perfect pop. ‘Powerlines’ is just a taster of what is about to come." - Dom Mariani

“Resplendent in a coat of many chimes, the new single ‘Powerlines’ from Western Australian band Rinehearts positively bursts through the speakers and showers you in sunshine and joy. With a chorus that’s as towering and awe-inspiring as the trees in the Valley of the Giants and a wall of jangling shimmering guitars, there is a genetic link to the sixties via the psychedelic touches of fellow Western Australian luminaries of the paisley underground (Scientists, The Stems, Hoodoo Gurus).” - Backseat Mafia

‘Powerlines’ explores the feeling of moving around from place to place only to realise what you’re chasing might not be there. The grass ain’t always greener, ya know….

In suburbia, the powerlines are always there to remind you of where you are, and your problems still tag along for the ride.

Musically, ‘Powerlines’ is fun and tough all at once, thumping drums, hooks for days. With a signature Rinehearts sound that has been absolutely encapsulated and embellished by Mariani. Think Blondie/Buzzcocks/The Who.

“Rinehearts trade in uber catchy pop/garage rock of the charming lo-fi kind. Super fine originals that fizzed, fuzzed and sparkled with righteous pop energy. Definitely a band to look out for.” – Stripeytop

The group has been powering out the pop since forming in 2016, with the band members’ pedigrees including two notable Perth bands. Ben Ward (guitar/vocals) and Mitch Long (bass) were formally members of high-energy rock ’n’ rollers Screwtop Detonators, who rode the rock wave in the mid-00s to international semi-prominence, recorded with legendary producer Charles Fisher (Radio Birdman, Hoodoo Gurus) at Trafalgar Studios in Sydney, won the attention of Marky Ramone and Deniz Tek, and were even the subject of an award-winning feature documentary, filmed over a ten-year period, called “Meal Tickets”.

Around the same time, drummer Ross Di Blasio was a member of Snowman, who released three acclaimed albums, toured with the likes of the Drones and Wolfmother, and eventually relocated to London before disbanding in 2011.

Rinehearts came together in 2016, with the purpose of exploring the members’ mutual love of power pop-styled music. They are frequently compared to the likes of The Replacements and Reigning Sound; to which you might wanna add the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Shoes and some of the pure power pop projects – like the DM3 or the Someloves - from hometown hero Dom Mariani. You could add Even to that list too, which is cool because their label, Cheersquad, is run by Even bass player Wally Kempton, who loves these guys.

Ben, Mitch and Ross are long-time friends, and you can hear that in the music. There is a sweet friendliness to their sound, and a sense of easy fun. The group’s tunes received international attention from the get-go when UK label No Front Teeth Records released their first record, the 7” EP ‘Try Your Luck,’ within months of the band forming. The living room-recorded debut album ‘Can’t Do Nothing’ followed on Cheersquad in 2019, and the band added an east coast contingent to its ever-expanding but west-centered fan base.

Rinehearts are one of the latest in a long line of Perth pop/power pop bands that goes back to the late 70s, when the Manikins and the Scientists wore their Flamin’ Groovies fandom on their sleeves. You might wanna ever add the Triffids to the list – they released their first single on a label called Shake Some Action after all. The 80s brought the prolific Summer Suns and the Stems along with at least two more plant-based popsters, the Bamboos and the Marigolds. And of course, those other, previously mentioned pure power pop Dom Mariani projects. Dom of course is the patron saint of Perth Power pop, and he has anointed Rinehearts, given them shows with the Stems and his current band, the harder rocking Datura 4, and is now working with them on their forthcoming second album.

lyrics

Never seen anything like it
You force something so hard until it breaks
We all make mistakes

Back to where we started
Blindingly wholehearted once again
Certain once again

Powerlines 3x

Made a big decision
To never let anyone make you feel again
That happiness is sin

I'm anything other than perfect
Stuck in the middle of knowing what it takes
We all make mistakes

Powerlines 4x

I'll do it if you say you will 5x

I'll do it if you say you will 4x

Powerlines 8x
