about

There's an iconic scene from "The Crown" where a young Princess Anne is driving her Reliant Scimitar down The Mall towards Buckingham Palace, late at night, belting out "Starman" by David Bowie.
I wanted to write a song that would be this album's "Starman". Not necessarily a dancefloor hit, but a "turn it up in the car and you're still singing the outro when the song ends" kind of tune.
It acknowledges some of the hedonistic and self-indulgent activities that I got up to in my 20s, and how these became an outlet whilst I was striving for perfectionism.
I'm not celebrating my behaviour, but merely suggesting that looking back, I don't have any regrets - which is mostly true.

lyrics

I’ve been living in fantasy
A life of infinite rhapsody
Out on my own where I’m wild and free
No choices to make, threw my chances away

I’ve been thinking about friends of mine
Breaking out of the paradigm
I’d like to join them if I could find the time
But there’ll be no regret, I’m not leaving you yet

Looking back won’t change nothing baby
Begging you “please”, it’s just not my style
I’m broke, despondent and loveless
But it was all worthwhile

I’ve been burning the candle bright
Crystal clear in the deep dead of night
Could’ve pushed harder if I felt it was right
But I sure did indulge, this I must divulge

So, perfection is an endless dream
Introspection is a dangerous thing
Please don’t forget me while I’m in between
I’ve made my own bed; I’ll sleep when I’m dead

Looking back won’t change nothing baby
Begging you “please”, it’s just not my style
I’m burnt out, wretched and jaundiced
But it was all worthwhile

We used to stay out all night
Making plans for a world we’d be living in now
Well time has changed us for better
But it was all worthwhile

Looking back won’t re-write the story
Drifting away on the winds of time
I’m broke, naïve and distorted
But it was all worthwhile
